Everyone knows that a bad hair day can ruin an otherwise great day. Here are five tips to help prevent your hair from getting unruly.

  1. Lather, rinse, rinse and rinse again.
Some days are so hectic that our hair doesn’t have a chance. We don’t have time to scrub the scalp to remove excess oils and buildup, and we don’t completely rinse shampoo and conditioner from our hair, which makes it unmanageable. Rinse thoroughly to ensure that all traces of shampoo and conditioner have been cleaned from the hair. In order to help seal the hair’s cuticle and to give you more shine, rinse your hair with cool to lukewarm water.
  2. Invest in a good blow-dryer.
If you are using a low-quality hair dryer, it will show in your hair. Cheaply made dryers have a coil and motor that can overheat, resulting in the frying of your hair’s cuticle. This doesn’t mean that you have to buy a professional dryer; they can be so powerful that they burn your hair if used incorrectly. A good indicator is this: the louder the sound of your dryer, the poorer the quality. When shopping for a blow-dryer, choose an ionic one. Ionic technology helps shrink water molecules so your hair will dry faster and with less damage.
  3. Don’t go outside with wet hair!
The wind, sun and cold temperatures can be rough on our hair even when it’s dry. But when our hair is wet, it is at its weakest and much more susceptible to breaks. Don’t aggressively brush your hair when it is wet. And avoid putting wet hair in a ponytail or braid. Wait until your hair is thoroughly dry to avoid damage.
  4. Avoid smoking for your health and your hair.
We all know the effects of smoking on our skin, but did you know smoking also pollutes our hair? Smoke leaves an unpleasant residue on both the hair and scalp. This residue leaves hair looking lifeless and dull. Not to mention that the hair holds the unpleasant odor of smoke, noticeable to everyone around you.
  5. Be loyal to your shampoo and conditioner.
In those situations where we need to wash our hair away from home, bring your own bottle! It’s easy to reach for the products supplied in your gym locker room or hotel, but don’t do it. Many places stock economical hair care products, which are loaded with detergents that can strip your hair of moisture. Convenient travel sizes of your favorite products are the key to a good hair day.
